Ravelrig RDA presentation at the National RDA AGM in Saddlers Hall, London on 11th November 2011
Barbara Johnstone and Lynda Whittaker gave an inspiring presentation to over 120 RDA representatives from throughout the UK, which described the Ravelrig “Journey of Change” – from our humble beginnings of a muddy field and an even muddier pony, to our facilities and service at the moment and our ambitious plans for an indoor riding arena in the future.

Margaret Morgan, Regional Chairperson, Lothians, Fife and Borders said “the Ravelrig presentation was excellent and I felt so proud of you both. The audience reaction and the people who wanted to talk to you afterwards reflected on how much you related the presentation to many other Groups”.

Ravelrig now look forward to accepting invitations to visit other indoor centres and researching new RDA activites including show jumping, which will strengthen the business case for funding for the new indoor development.

Barbara Johnstone receives National Vounteer of the Year Finalist Award
As one of only three finalists from the whole of the UK, Barbara Johnstone, Ravelrig RDA Group Organiser was presented with this well deserved award by Sam Orde, RDA National Chairman at the National RDA AGM in Saddlers Hall, London on 11th November 2011.

Over the last 26 years, Barbara has played a central role in working with riders, parents and volunteers to develop Ravelrig into a valued and successful RDA Group. The award recognised the high level of voluntary commitment Barbara has shown and outlined the many activities she has undertaken, from instructing and fundraising to horse care and cleaning, – there are too many to mention.

On being presented with the award, Barbara said that “she accepts the award on behalf of everyone involved at Ravelrig”.

Congratulations and well done to Barbara.

OUR AIM
The aim of Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) is to provide people with a disability, the opportunity to ride and enjoy all the activities connected with horse riding. Riding for people with a disability is both therapeutic and recreational and RDA is in fact one of the few organisations who offer a multi-diagnostic service, catering for a wide range of disabilities.

OUR OBJECTIVES
To provide disabled people with the means to ride at the level of their ability, choice and ambition.

To acquire, manage and support the resources; people, ponies, facilities and finance to acheive the objectives.

To make available suitable training.

BENEFITS TO THE RIDER
Horse riding is a unique form of exercise and rehabilitation. The complex movement of the horse helps to improve co-ordination, balance, muscular development and fitness. Horse riding and horse related activities assist greatly and often dramatically in the development of personal confidence, self esteem, communication skills, leadership and trust. For those with challenging behaviour, horses offer a powerful medium for restoring a sense of personal control, which significantly improves behaviour towards family, teachers and friends.
