FACILITIES
In 1997 some of the land used for grazing was sold for development and Barnado's relocated the group to another area within the Ravelrig estate.
The purpose built facilities include:
A 20m x 40m riding arena with ramp
10 stables
Tack room
Barns
Garage
Storage
Workshop
Disabled toilets
Office
Club room with conservatory
Kitchen
Car Park
Play equipment
All areas are wheelchair friendly
In 1999 HRH The Princess Royal officially opened the new premises. She was given a tour of the establishment, observed riding displays, presented five ponies and one volunteer with long service awards and each of the 75 riders received a rosette. Tea and refreshments were served and HRH met loyal supporters of the group. It was a truely memorable day.
During the Summer of 2002 IKEA and their staff completely refurbished the toilet, office, kitchen, club room and tack room.
In 2003 a conservatory was kindly donated by Mr. D. McNaughton, this was erected during the summer and has given no end of pleasure, not only to helpers and riders but more importantly a pleasant area for parents and carers to have coffee and chat amongst themselves while observing riders working in the arena.
The picnic table provides a pleasent area for everybody to relax.
From the stables we enjoy an excellent view of Balerno and the Pentland Hills.
Some of the volunteers have worked very hard to cultivate a vegetable patch, where potatoes, lettuce, beetroot, onions, leeks, peas, carrots and tomatoes are grown. Naturally the produce is excellent because it is grown in "home made manure"
With the profits from the tuck shop the volunteers bought a trampoline. One little boy who rides with us suffers from Autism. He enjoyed his riding but gets just as much pleasure having a play afterwards. He gave us the idea to create a play area.
So, on a hot summers day a group of volunteers worked exceptionally hard to clear an area of trees and shrubs. With money kindly donated by the Ladies of Sighthill Bowling Club we were able to buy a wooden activity aparatus. Joshua's (Saturday morning rider) mum, Mrs Hepple, sourced and got funding for a special needs swing.
We were also able to buy a wooden Wendy House, complete with upstairs. People have kindly donated bits and pieces so the children have something to play with inside. This area is an important part of Ravelrig for riders and their siblings.
